Marbled Valentine Heart with Shaving Cream

Looking for a great Valentine craft? Look no further.I found the most perfect Valentine craft over at the Chocolate Muffin Tree, and I just had to replicate it. The kids loved doing this craft. It is up any kids’ alley. They were mixing color with shaving cream and dripping and swirling to their hearts’ content…no pun intended. It’s not hard to create this beautiful marbled look. My 2 year old son created the feature picture seen above with just a little tutorial and help from me.

You will want to prepare a little bit before your kids get to the table. You will need: stock paper (cut into hearts smaller than the plate holding your shaving cream), shaving cream, food coloring or paint (watered down – I had these food color gels that I watered down), paint brush or dropper, stick for stirring (I just used the paint brush), a tray of some sort (I used a paper plate), and a straight edge to wipe away the excess shaving cream. Once I was all set up, my kids were invited to the table. I did this craft with one child at a time.

The first step was to squirt out your shaving cream. Mine was was about an inch-ish thick.

Next, take the watered down paint or food coloring and drip it randomly onto the shaving cream. Another idea is to use a dropper to squeeze up a little at a time and drop it onto the shaving cream.

The kids then get to twirl the color into the shaving cream. You don’t want to over-5wirl because you want the marbled look in the cream.

The next step is to lay your paper on top of the shaving cream. Make sure it is touching the heart everywhere and then peel it off. Don’t worry, you’re not done yet. Right now it just looks like a blob of colorful shaving cream on the heart. The magic happens next.

You will use your flat edge to scrape off the excess shaving cream. I used a pan scraper I had. I discarded the shaving cream back onto the same plate and re-used it. It had a slight tint to it, but that worked out just fine. We just added more drops and started swirling away again. Look at the beautiful marbling that has happened under that layer of cream. So cool. The kids loved the reveal.

Did they have more fun making the craft or playing in the shaving cream afterward? I’m not sure. Oh well. They needed baths anyway. Here’s a couple tips: They use my old t-shirts for paint shirts. I use plastic, Dollar-store table clothes again and again to cover my table. I use the cardboard from cereal boxes to do crafts on. I know. I ended my sentence in a preposition. What is this? Grammar class?

  1. Adorable and FUN and easy idea. :-)

  2. That reminds me of teaching nursery school! The oversized shirts to protect kids’ clothes, we got free “tablecloths” from the paper products manufacturer across the street. From the first pic, I never would have guessed this was a kid craft. It’s beautiful!
