Heart Peacock Craft Teaches True Love from 1 Corinthians 13:4-8

This week we have been talking about love in our character development series.
Most people are familiar with 1 Corinthians 13:4-8 that says, “Love is patient; love is kind. It does not envy. It does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trust, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.” Last year we made a heart garland with this verse. The scripture is just so good that I wanted to review it again. As we were going over each description of love, I let the kids tell me what they thought it meant. When they didn’t know, I explained it. I also explained that we try and love like this, but only one person does it perfectly. They knew I was talking about God’s love. What we experience from humans on earth can never compare to this perfect love given from God alone. We can catch glimpses of it and try to live it out as much of it as we can, but we never know it completely until we know God completely. We’ll understand someday I’m sure. I wanted to think of a new way to present this verse to the girls. This is the craft I came up with, and I’m really happy with the results.

I first made you a printable. It’s my hand drawn heart and peacock body shape. Sorry it’s a little rough around the edges, but it will work for you just fine. All you do is print these images onto card stock paper and use it as a template. 

I did the preparations for my kids. Your older kids could probably trace and cut out their own hearts and peacock body. I had 4 different tones of reds and pinks. I cut out a total of 16 heart feathers so that I could fit all the scripture on the peacock. We only made one peacock and worked as a team.

The next step was to glue it all together. The girls were gluing at the base and where the hearts crisscrossed. When all glued together, it looked like a heart fan (center picture), which we all thought was pretty cool in and of itself. 

The next step was to glue the peacock body right in the center of the heart fan.

The final step I did, which was write out love in the middle of the peacock and then all the different components to love on the heart feathers. 

As you celebrate love this Valentine’s day, I pray that you realize that this holiday is not about being in love, but it is a celebration of the love that has been given to us by our Heavenly Father. St. Valentinus new this love, which inspired his story and the birth of Valentine’s Day.
