“A friend loves at all times…” – Proverbs 17:17A
“The best way to make a friend is to be one.” A lot of time kids will complain that they don’t have any friends, but you see their attitude or actions and understand why that might be happening. This is definitely not always the case, and it’s hard to be neutral and see the situation clearly when it is your own child. Kids can be cruel to each other for no reason at all. You do want to look at the actions of your own child as clearly as possible. In general, kids will make more friends as they learn to be a good friend. What does it take to be a good friend? I think friendliness is huge. They need to learn to smile. They need to learn to engage. Here are some thoughts to help your kids along:
* Take a genuine interest in others.
* Say “Hi.”
* Be positive.
* As a parent, model it.
* Learn to ask questions about others.
* Focus on others more than you focus on yourself.
* Find friends with common interests.
* Be nice.
* Make eye contact.
* Keep your word.
* Don’t be a demanding friend – demanding attention or things.
* Exhibit self control.
* Use common social skills when interacting.
* Learn to serve others.
* Read body language.
* Learn empathy.
* Don’t have a need to always be right.
* Be a light.
* Be genuine. Don’t have ulterior motives.
Not in all cases, but often when children exhibit these character qualities, they will become more of a magnet to make genuine friends. I don’t need or even want my kids to be the most popular kids in school. However, I would love for them to be know for their kindness. We can make no promises to our kids that if you act a certain way, everyone will like you. However, you can explain that when you exhibit the qualities listed above you are more likely to be a magnet to people. Today, I wanted to explore the idea of being a magnet. I don’t remember where I saw the idea. I thought it was on my Pinterest board, but I couldn’t find it, so I’m sorry I haven’t linked back. All you do is cut up pipe cleaners and stick them in a bottle. Then, use a magnet on the side to lift and pull the pipe cleaners around. You can talk about how when you have the above qualities, you are more likely to pull people toward you.
