Saying, “Rewind. Start Over,” was a phrase I used for the first time today. It happened during a car ride. It was obvious that both girls were not handling the situation the right way. It would be difficult to break down everything that went went wrong in those 30 seconds. I could track it a little bit, but when I dissected it, I was very aware that Abby did something she shouldn’t do. Kenzie responded by doing something she shouldn’t do. Then, Abby responded the wrong way with an instant break down. Rather than address all of those issues, I just said, “Rewind. Start Over.” They knew what went wrong as well as I did. I explained that both of them did the wrong thing and responded the wrong way. The solution, I explained, was them to try the whole interaction again. It worked. They were able to try it all over again, interacting the right way with one another. There was no yelling or arguing. It was a do over.
