Day #240 – Raising Money to Buy School Supplies for those in Need

I watch some shows where kids start organizations because they see a need. These are kids who are thinking outside themselves and care so much about others that they choose to make a difference. I would love to create a heart in my kids to care for the people in this world. It is what Jesus has called us to as believers. He was all about taking care of “the least of these.” Faith has to have action that consists of loving others. I wanted to find a way to serve others that my girls could relate to. With all of the buzz about school coming up and the excitement of my little kindergardener, I figured we could piggy back on that to bless others. I asked Abby if she wanted to be in charge of helping us raise money for kids who can’t afford school supplies. She was excited about that idea. So, I called a friend who works with “Communities in Schools,” a non-profit organization that helps provide resources to kids in need. They are constantly taking donations of a number of items, and school supplies are always a need. I asked if we might be able to be connected with specific families to provide supplies for so that we can really begin to make a relationship with them. She said it would be a possibility, and she is providing me with some families. So, it was time to set Abby to work.

She started calling everyone we know to raise funds.

She wrote a note to send with daddy to work so he could ask for donations at his company meeting.

She made a video to put on Facebook and send out to her dad’s colleagues.

We’ll keep you updated on how much we were able to raise. Let me know if you come up with an idea in your own area. I’d love to hear if others are inspired to do something in their community.

  1. Thank you for sharing the way you came up with and implemented this idea. I’ve been thinking of how to get our kids involved in volunteering, but it seems they’re too young for most opportunities. I think I need to think more outside the box. Your post has given me some good ideas. Thanks!:)

  2. I love it! Thank you so much for posting on Saturday Show and Tell. I hope you’ll be back this week to link up some more great ideas! Have a great rest of the week!
