Day #198 Tip – When There are More Adults Around, Pay More Attention

Today we hosted our church music team BBQ. Above is the one picture I took from the event. There were a lot of people and a lot of kids. I think it is easy to loosen up during those times. You just want to hang out with people, eat, enjoy, have fun. Parenting isn’t necessarily number one on your list. Also, I often find that we all assume that someone must be watching our kids and making sure nothing is going wrong. I would say that often everyone is in the laid back, party atmosphere and so forgetting to pay attention isn’t wise. I’ve heard that accidents with kids can often happen in this exact environment. Just because there are a lot of adults around doesn’t necessarily mean everyone is paying attention to your kids. Please keep a watchful eye on your kids during these times. I know it is so hard because you want your down time too. However, kids don’t suddenly make wise choices just because there’s a party going on. Every time I left to go do some of my hostess work, I made sure that someone I trusted was assigned to watch my kids. People are willing to help out. Make sure you keep an eye on your kids for safety reasons. You also don’t have the option of letting go of parenting even when there are other people around. You’ll still want to make sure your kids are exhibiting self control. I had to excuse myself today to deal with a behavior issue with my one of my children. Unfortunately, there’s few “off duty” moments as a parent.

  1. This is so so true! We think about this whenever we have or go to get togethers! It’s so easy to think that with all the adults around there are more eyes on the kids, but it’s almost the opposite. Everyone thinks someone else is watching. It’s such a good idea to put someone in charge if you need to step away. Thanks for posting!

  2. One idea I have read before is to have a designated parent/s to supervise the children, taking turns during the day. The designated parent/s wears something to identify them (e.g. baseball cap) so that everyone is aware of who is watching the children.
