Day #131 – Put the Phone Down

I just read a super convicting article, which I placed on my facebook page yesterday.  I wanted to follow up on here though because it is such a good reminder.  The reminder is simple – put your phone down.  I am with my kids all day, and I have my phone with me a huge percentage of that.  Yes, if it beeps at me, I check it.  Yes, I’m guilty of looking at an email or text at a stoplight.  I was just playing with my kids on our swing set yesterday.  I was running around with them, doing underdogs, holding them as they practiced the monkey bars – the whole bit.  I was also glancing at Pinterest, checking a couple emails as they arrived and sending a text.  You need to go read this article because if you have my addiction, this will make you re-evaluate it.  I am going to attempt to make my phone less of a priority when I’m with my family.  Please – go read this article: How to Miss a Childhood.

  1. Thank you for sharing this, I am always on my husband to put the phone down when he is spending time with the family. Going to have him read this article

  2. This is a great post. I also read the “How to Miss A Childhood” and it impacted me as well. I can truly relate to what you said in this article. I am also with my children all day and do many activities with them including the park quite frequently. I thought I was a good multi-tasker being able to play with my kids and check texts, emails, etc at the same time. But when I read that article and truly looked at it from my kids perspective and how they must feel it hit me. I am always telling my husband that he hears me but never truly LISTENS because he’s distracted when I talk to him. That’s probably how I was making my kids feel and I want them to be able to come to me with the small stuff now so they feel comfortable talking to me about the big stuff later. :-) It actually lead me to write this post….http://www.artistic31mama.com/2012/05/bible-challenge.html and start The Bible Challenge. Basically not only did I feel like I needed to put the phone down more, but pick my Bible up more often. :-) Thanks for sharing this!

    • Such a great article and a great reminder. Now off to search for a little Bible. I love the challenge and am definitely convicted by its message too. I love the thought of not just limiting our time or getting rid of something but having something way more valuable to bring into our lives. Thank you for your thoughtful message and post. I want to post it on my Facebook page.

    • That’s great! I know this challenge is changing me and my habits for the better and I’ve been telling everyone about it. I actually even had someone come up to me and comment on me reading my little Bible while working out at the gym. :-)
