My husband and I were reflecting on the drama we see in our children. We realized that perhaps they were learning some of it from us. Of course, as an adult it’s on a smaller scale. It might be spilling something and being annoyed with yourself so a big “Geez!” and a sigh and a dramatic annoyance with the situation. It may be how we respond to our kids when they’re out of sorts. There are a bunch of ways where I could see our drama pouring out onto our kids. Yesterday, my tip was model it. We may not have seen it because our drama looks different than theirs, but I definitely think we were not modeling the right behavior. We want our kids to be a tad more laid back. So, we decided to work on it ourselves and give permission to keep each other in check. We decided to create a family code phrase that means we’re responding with too much drama. We introduced the concept to our kids, and now we say a casual “check it” when drama is in play.
