Day #125 Diligence in Problem Solving – Character Development, Week #18

Diligence
Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men.
 - Colossians  3:23
I wanted my children to practice having diligence in problems solving, and I found a Preschool Mama Blog with some great ideas.  We were able to talk a bit about diligence as we did these fun activities.
Retrieve the Ball
The first activity involved putting a ball in a hard to reach place.  I said they needed to retrieve the ball from the top of the couch.  After trying to reach it with their arms, then using a couple other instruments that wouldn’t reach, they finally found something long enough.Candy Wall Grab

I taped a candy way up high on the wall.  They tried to first knock it off with a number of items that wouldn’t reach.  Then, Abby tried whacking at it with some clothes.  It didn’t reach.  They tried to stand on a couple things.  Finally, they got out the stool and combined it with a longer stick to retrieve it.

Move the Feather

I placed masking tape about four feet apart on thee ground.  Then, I placed a feather at one end and said they had to get the feather from one line to the next without using their hands.  They figured out right away that they could blow it.  I also showed them how they could use a piece of paper to fan it.

Fetch the Jelly Belly

The final task was to retrieve jelly bellies from some couscous that I had that had already expired.  They could only use the tools I provided, and they could only touch the jelly belly with their hands if there was no other couscous around.

All of these fun tasks taught them how it often takes diligence to accomplish tasks.  A bonus is that they used problem solving techniques, which really aids in their learning and development.
