“I can’t understand you,” is a phrase I’ve used in a few different circumstances. I use this phrase to indicate that they are whining. I say it if it is said in “baby talk.” I will say it if their mouth is full of food. I will also say it if I don’t hear a “please.” Finally, I will use this phrase if things are said in a rude or disrespectful way. Making your children learn to talk in a way that is pleasant, is very important in helping them develop great communication skills.

this is a great tip! I use this phrase often too. I often say, “I respond to children who speak… without whining or with kindness or with whatever skill we are working on at the time.” thanks for sharing!
It is so funny how similar in style we are.
