I’ve learned this in my marriage and am beginning to learn it in parenting too. At certain ages it is appropriate to address situations later rather than right in the heat of the moment. There are times I’ve waited to have my oldest curl up on my lap and sit and talk to her about other things before I say something like, “I heard you being really bossy with your sister upstairs. Do you remember that?” Then, we can discuss it in moment where it’s peaceful, and I don’t need to drag her away from a situation where her sister seemed to not flinch. There are definitely times to address things immediately…more often probably. However, there are times where you will get through to your child more when they are calm, more rested, more fed or in a better mood. Littler kids will have a harder time remembering the moments, so this tactic will definitely be used more as children advance in age.
