Day #108 Inner Peace – Character Development, Week #16

Perhaps you saw my post about 10 Ways to Calm an Angry Child.  Today I wanted to do some direct teaching for my kids on how to have a peaceful heart.  A number of these tools came from my earlier post.  Teaching kids tools to deal with their emotions outside of “the moment” can really help them deal better within the moment.  As I was teaching them the five tools, we acted them out, but then I would review each time we added another one.  Hopefully, this will help them have better recall while they are needing to inner peace.
 1. Pray - When it boils down to it, I believe the only way to know true peace is to know Jesus.  Inner peace comes from knowing God and relying on Him when the outside is in turmoil.  I wanted to teach my kids that this is the number one step they can take.  
 2. Fold Hands - Folding hands is a proven way to create calm.  This is the second tool I taught my kids to help them achieve peace when they are upset.
 3. Breathing – Breathing is a great technique that will calm a body.  When Corban heard us practicing our breathing, he had to join in the fun.  Teach kids to breathe in a steady and deep way.

 4. Hug Yourself – Being held tight has a very calming effect.  They are even making compression clothing for kids dealing with autism.  The pressure on their bodies helps them relax more.  Wrapping your arms around yourself or cuddling up in a heavy blanket can bring more peace.

 5. Think of Good Things – Philippians 4:8 says, “Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable–if anything is excellent or praiseworthy–think about such things.”  This verse has been one I’ve memorized and claimed if my thoughts go too negative.  If you need to find more peace, focus on everything that is good rather than the bad.  This will create more peace.  After reading the verse and talking about this concept, we watched the “Favorite Things” clip from “The Sound of Music.”
