Day #85 Tip – Train the Positive Side of their Challenging Personality Traits

I have said it over and over…we want to get to our kids hearts.  Sometimes it’s hard to get their heart in the moment.  My oldest daughter has a flare for the dramatic.  I can just see her taking an interest in being on stage someday.  I get it!  I think she got some of that from my genes.  Right now, the drama often comes out the wrong way.  We’re trying to train it up because we know that although sometimes this trait manifests itself in a way that seems negative right now, if trained right, it can be utilized for good.  It can be a great gift of hers.  After the birthday party today Abby started in on some drama about her foot being so hurt.  She played it up big time – turning into disobedience and a need for discipline.  She was crawling around saying how much her foot hurt, but when I said our neighbor friends were at the window she immediately got up and ran.  This followed with me being angry at her for lying.  Her dramatic response was, “I wasn’t lying.  I can run or crawl.  I just can’t walk.” Oh the drama.  It’s driving me crazy. I don’t know when to sympathize and when to tell her to buck up.  However, if I try and focus this energy – encouraging her as she has the enthusiasm and the excitement for life that comes with that personality, it can bring a lot of joy.  If I let her pursue positive ways to display this talent – dance or theater, it can touch a lot of hearts.  This comes with development, self control and proper rearing, but I need to try and see some of the positives in the things that might be driving me crazy about my little ones. This is something I’m really needing to work on right now.
