Day #76 Sensitivity Bible Verse – Character Development, Week #11

Sensitivity
“…so in Christ we who are many form one body, and each member belongs to all the others.” – Romans 12:5
I believe this verse may not make sense to some as to how it relates to sensitivity.  I really should have done this activity at the beginning of the week so that the verse made more sense with the word as we progressed through the week.  I will explain it now.  The Bible talks about us all being part of the body of Christ.  The body is made up of many parts, and we don’t function as well if one of those parts is missing.  This is true in the family of God too.  Our work here would not be complete without us all working together.  Everyone has different talents and gifts.  Everyone thinks differently and has different things to contribute.  Each one is valuable, and we wouldn’t function as well without them.  Therefore, we need to have sensitivity toward other people in our body because “each member belongs to all the others.”  It is important for us to use our senses to understand how other people think and feel so that we can respond appropriately.  So, today was a lesson in the importance of being sensitive to all members of this body.
The first thing I did was took a piece of stock paper (a bit heavier than regular printing paper) and drew out a man.  I then drew out a puzzle on top of the guy and began to cut it out.

The girls actually led this into a side activity.  Both of them wanted me to draw the outline of a person so they could color in their own clothes.  They did this while I cut out the puzzle.

The next step was to put the puzzle together.  We had to review perseverance and patience from week one and two during this step as the girls were frustrated it wouldn’t stay together like a normal puzzle.  Once the puzzle was completed, I took a part of the guy away.
Me: What would happen to the guy of this piece was taken?
Girls: He wouldn’t have an eye?
Me: Do you think his body would work as well without an eye?
Girls: No

I continued to take away different pieces with the same dialogue.  I then related it to being the body of Christ.  We also talked about how that related to being sensitive to the other members of the body.

Next I asked them about their thumbs.  I said their thumbs couldn’t possible be important because they are so small.  I gave them their  Mr. Potato Head and told them to put it together without using their thumbs.  When they realized how difficult it was, I talked to them about how everyone is important and every job is important to make this world work.  Things that may seem insignificant are actually really valuable, and we need to be sensitive to everyone’s role.
