Day #51 Microwave Foam Fun

Today was another sick day here, but I wanted to still find a fun, interesting activity for the kids to do.  I found this one on Wendolonia.
Microwave exploding soap 1
Take a bar of Ivory soap.  It must be Ivory soap because it is made differently than other soap.  It has little air pockets within the soap.  It has air whipped into it.  Next, stick it into the microwave for 30-40 seconds. The result?

We then decided to do our own little experiment.  We cut the other half of the soap into four parts and added different color food coloring to each section.  The result?

Not as dramatic as I had hoped.  Maybe if we had painted the food coloring on the whole bar.  Still cool.

We then gave the kids a mini-science lesson on how air expands when it is heated.
Warning:  If you are sensitive to smell, be careful  Our whole house ended up smelling like soap.  My husband gets migraines from certain smells.  Fortunately, I think we avoided it by having him leave the house immediately and opening all the doors.
Warning #2:  It cools fairly quickly, but make sure you touch it before your kids so there are no burnt fingers.

    • It’s hard to describe how it feels. You can grab it, and it kind of squishes back together. It fluffy but not moist at all. Hard to describe I guess. We were all intrigued by it though.

  6. This looks like so much fun! I don’t have any kids, but I might just do this myself!
