Self Control
”Like a city whose walls are broken down is a man who lacks self-control.”
Proverbs 25:28
Proverbs 25:28
Today we talked about this verse a bit more. We explained how cities used to need walls for for protection. If the walls were broken down it meant that the city could be in danger. In the same way, if we lack self control, we can be putting ourselves in danger.
We talked about a couple ways both girls were going to try and have self control this week. Abby is trying to stop biting her nails. Kenzie is trying to not get into “trouble” (she is prone to getting into things she is not suppose to). I talked to both girls about how I want to celebrate their successes with them. Any time they had the urge or the temptation to do something that they shouldn’t but showed self control, I wanted them to come to me and tell me about it, and we would celebrate their success together. Celebrating simply looked like cheering and affirmation. We will be working on this all week.
Our final activity regarding self control came in the form of games. We talked about how it’s important to try and have self control when it comes to our bodies. So, to show how we can have self control over our bodies we played a few games – “Simon Says,” “Red Light, Green Light” and “Ready, Set, Go.” I think the first two games are pretty familiar, but I’ll explain the third. It’s basically a race, but they need to wait for the words, “Ready, Set, Go.” I would substitute words for “Go.” Sometimes it would be tricky like, “Ready, Set, Grow” or “Ready, Set, Gorilla.” They had to wait for the right words to run the race. I tried to make the connections between them being able to control their bodies in the game and in real life – keeping our hands to ourselves, biting nails, taking, etc. I’ve said it, and I’ll say it again…”Games are how kids learn.”

We just played Ready, Set, Go and had a blast! Thanks for sharing. I’ve decided to join you in your weekly character development as I know my boys and I need it.
Thanks!!!
I am so excited that you are following along. I’ve wanted it to impact my family and feel so grateful that it’s being utilized by others too. Let me know of other successes, Trina.
