Flank Steak Marinade

Flank Steak Marinade

I love recipes that are simple and the kids can help make.  I have found cooking with kids more challenging than baking due to the knives involved.  This recipe, however, is similar to baking in that the kids get to dump a bunch of things.  Dumping also means it’s fast.  This recipe is one of my favorites.  My mom used to cook our favorite meal when we came home from college.  This is what I always requested.  Here’s the recipe:

Carol’s Flank Steak Marinade
1/4 cup soy sauce
2 Tbsp red wine vinegar
1/2 tsp ginger
3/4 cup olive oil
3 Tbsp honey
1 1/2 tsp garlic powder
2 chopped green onions
Add all ingredients in a shallow dish.  I like to put it in a big zip lock bag, seal it completely and then let the kids shake it.  Then, stick the flank steak in the marinade all day or overnight. BBQ it for 7 minutes per side.
The great thing about this recipe is that BBQ is no clean up, it’s easy for the kids to help, it can be done a day ahead, and it’s delicious.  Win, win, win, win.
I like to make food an experience, so they get to help dump.  The pictures of them staring at the green onions is actually them smelling.  I love to let them smell all the ingredients…especially when I’m cooking with herbs.  I talked about knife safety and how they never touch the knives, but I also showed them knife skills as I chopped the onions.  Every moment in cooking is teachable.
