Your kids won’t feel like you’re running their lives all day if you give them lots of little choices throughout the day that you can agree to. You can ask them if they want their sandwich cut in half or into fourths. You can ask them if they want black socks or white socks. These little choices give them a sense of ownership and make them feel that they have some control in decisions in their lives. Their self-esteem and sense of importance in the family increases as you show them you trust them to make choices in their own lives. The amount of choices they make increases as they get older and have shown themselves trustworthy. I have also found that the more choices I give them for the little stuff results in them trusting me more as I make some choices for the bigger stuff.
